Social media primer

February 20th, 2008

We’re getting so comfortable with social media terms around here; I stumbled across this “definition list” that breaks down what we’re all so excited about. It’s crafted for educators, but hey, we play that role as communications counselors, too.  Will we see my favorite term, Google Jockeying, emerge in business meetings?

I had a long conversation with Jim Bain (FlyingDogMedia)yesterday about the learning curve with educators that, for the most part, have not embraced some of the new 2.0 tools. (partly because of the need not to, personal preference, curriculum, ignorance of, not part of their world, etc). Perhaps all good reasons. I also am sensitive to “keep the main thing, the main thing” and that involves personal interaction with kids and good ole “teaching and learning.” BUT, i believe we owe it to our students to keep up with these tools for 4 reasons. 1) ENGAGEMENT, 2) Rich learning experiences beyond the school walls, 3) teaching 21st century skill sets that are necessary as a lifelong learner and 4) because that’s the world millennials live in today.

I appreciate you posting this information. At least at CATEC, it’s our job to see how we incorporate some of these ideas into practical learning experiences for our kids AND get our faculty and staff up to speed in the process. The innovators, like yourself, are keen to understanding these pracitices. Its those who are just beginning to be exposed that have the greatest learning curve. A challenge, but a challenge worth tackling- for kids sake.

We are always open to ideas and outside involvement……
